Nnamdi Kanu granted leave to watch all of Liverpool’s games after revealing that he is a fan

INDIGENOUS People of Biafra (Ipob) leader Nnamdi Kanu has been granted leave to watch all of Liverpool’s games while he in detention by the federal high court Abuja after he told the judge that he is a lifelong fan of the football club.

Highly controversial, Mr Kanu has been campaigning for the recreation of the independent republic of Biafra which broke away from Nigeria between July 1967 and January 1970 during the civil war. His campaign, which has led to the phenomenal growth of Ipob, has set him at odds with the Nigerian government who him arrested and put on trial for treason.

While the case was still pending, Mr Kanu was granted bail in April 2017 on health grounds but skipped his bail after flouting the conditions given to him by the court and fled Nigeria. In a dramatic development, in June last year, Mr Kanu was abducted in Kenya and flown to Nigeria, where he has since been arrayed in court in Abuja, with fresh charges added to the pending ones.

Yesterday, when his case came up for hearing, Justice Binta Nyako jokingly mentioned that she was a fan of Liverpool and asked Mike Ozekhome, Mr Kanu’s lawyer, which club was his favourite. Mr Ozekhome replied that he was also a Liverpool fan and Mr Kanu too then replied that he had supported the Reds since he was seven years old.

Following this revelation, the judge then told the Department of State Services legal director who was in court to allow Mr Kanu to watch the matches of his favourite football club. Meanwhile, the judge observed that Mr Kanu had continued to show up in court in the same attire despite her order for him to change clothes.

Meanwhile, the 2022 English Premier League season will climax this Sunday with Liverpool to stage a historic moment to beat leaders, Manchester City to the title. However, Liverpool and Manchester City go into the final games of the season with 89 and 90 points respectively.

Both clubs will be at home as Liverpool face Wolverhampton Wanderers while Man City will battle Aston Villa. All 10 matches in the English Premier League are scheduled to kick off simultaneously at 4pm West African Time this Sunday.
