Yuletide: Umahi cancels holidays for works ministry directors
The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has instructed directors within the Federal Ministry of Works and Federal Controllers of Works across the nation to cancel their holiday travel arrangements and remain actively engaged at work throughout the festive season.
This directive mandates that senior officials stay on-site at ongoing federal road projects to guarantee that construction activities do not obstruct the smooth flow of traffic during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
Umahi made this announcement on Tuesday during an emergency meeting in Abuja with senior ministry officials and contractors responsible for major federal highway projects nationwide.
The minister specifically voiced his discontent with the traffic conditions on the Abuja–Lokoja Road, labeling it as “very embarrassing,” especially considering the number of travelers anticipated during the holiday season.
He instructed that the road be urgently opened to facilitate vehicular movement and avoid extensive gridlock for motorists entering and leaving the Federal Capital Territory.
Umahi also expressed serious concerns regarding the ongoing traffic congestion on the Enugu–Onitsha Road, despite the government's previous efforts to address the issue.
While inspecting the road, the minister remarked, “I do not understand why the gridlock persists. The road is a dual carriageway, and successive administrations have implemented various interventions on it.”
He underscored that the ongoing congestion is unacceptable and called for immediate collaboration between contractors and supervising engineers to eliminate any hindrances along the corridor.
The minister highlighted that coordinated efforts are essential across all major federal highways to ensure a seamless traffic flow and provide safe, hassle-free travel for Nigerians during the holiday season.
