Yuletide: Tomato prices will drop, farmers assure Nigerians
The Tomatoes Growers and Processors Association of Nigeria has forecasted an increase in the availability of tomatoes in anticipation of the upcoming Christmas and New Year festivities.
Mr. Rabiu Zuntu, the association's Chairman, shared this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Monday.
Zuntu mentioned to NAN that the prices of tomatoes are expected to gradually decrease due to the rising supply as the holidays approach. He explained, “Currently, the price of tomatoes is relatively low, often driven by the principles of demand and supply. A higher supply leads to lower prices, and the opposite is also true.”
The Chairman elaborated on the price reduction, stating, “At this moment, the quantity being supplied is increasing, and prices have dropped significantly. Last week in the northern region, a 50kg basket of tomatoes was priced between N25,000 and N30,000, whereas just weeks ago, it was N40,000 and N60,000.” He added, “As of now, the same quantity of tomatoes can be found for between N15,000 and N16,000 in the north.” In wrapping up his forecast, he said, “With the current surge in tomato supply, there will be ample quantity for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.”
He indicated that several farmers have yet to harvest their crops. Zuntu continued, “Indeed, we will have sufficient tomatoes because, considering the farming environment and the readiness of the tomatoes for harvest, we are in a good position.” He confirmed, “There are some farming areas where harvesting has not yet begun, and for those who have started, the quantity will keep increasing leading up to the Christmas and New Year festivities.”
NAN reported that a 50kg basket of tomatoes in Lagos is currently priced between ₦40,000 and ₦50,000, compared to sales of over ₦80,000 to ₦100,000 in previous months. Likewise, a crate of tomatoes is now being sold in Lagos for between ₦15,000 and ₦18,000.
