Wike vows to end vandalism in FCT

The Ministry of Federal Capital Territory is investigating some suspected vandals who allegedly stole and vandalized sewage manhole covers in Abuja.

Mr Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, confirmed this in a statement issued on Sunday.

Wike stated that efforts were underway to apprehend the vandals' collaborators, particularly the buyers of the manhole covers.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, an unidentified Nigerian used his TikTok handle, @savvarkmedia360, to condemn the continued vandalism of manhole covers on FCT highways and urged Wike to take action.

The minister stated that relevant authorities had been directed to work tirelessly to prevent the act of vandalism, and that the public would be informed in due course.

Wike expressed displeasure that some Nigerians could go so far as to remove sewage manhole covers from highways and sell them, endangering the lives of road users.

He vowed that the FCT Administration would do everything possible to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The minister also thanked the Nigerian who captured video of the vandalism and shared it online, describing it as a great example of patriotism.

According to him, it is encouraging that ordinary Nigerians are speaking out against the vandalism.

"Overall, it's encouraging to see that people are taking this issue seriously and working together to resolve it.

"The FCT Administration is taking this seriously, working to stop the vandalism and keep the city safe.

"It's worth noting that this isn't just a matter of theft, but also a safety issue, as these stolen covers can put road users at risk," he told reporters.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, Superintendent of Police Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the command had detained a suspected vandal and recovered seven manhole covers from him.
