Why I declared emergency state on education, health — Zamfara gov
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal announced that he has declared a state of emergency in the education and health sectors to revitalize them for the welfare of the citizens. He made this known on Monday in Gusau while receiving the management team of the newly established Federal University of Medical Sciences and Health Technology, Tsafe.Welcoming the team, Governor Lawal said, “I want to welcome you to the Zamfara State Government House. This is the first time we are meeting officially to discuss the newly established university.” He explained that his administration had declared a state of emergency in education and health because “health is an important sector that we value and are eager to revive.” He added that the new university merges both sectors, focusing on medical sciences.
He assured the university of full government support, noting, “We have approximately four hectares of land, enough for any project we want to undertake to improve the university. My administration has invested over 8 billion naira in the school.” He promised to provide all necessary resources for a smooth start, emphasizing a united effort for a seamless transition, especially since some students are already enrolled.
Governor Lawal concluded, “Be assured that my government is committed to supporting the university fully. We will continue to seek additional funds, and everyone is united in this effort, standing by you.”
Earlier, Vice‑Chancellor Professor Ibrahim Yakasai praised the governor for his dedication to reviving education and health in Zamfara. He remarked, “I want to commend you for declaring a state of emergency in education. Education is the backbone of development.” He also highlighted the administration’s achievements in the medical field, saying, “I have gone around the hospitals in Zamfara and seen what you have achieved; you have the capacity, the will, and passion to make this university a success.”
He noted international recognition of the governor’s efforts, recalling, “I was in America the last time, and they did mention your name. I know you have gone a long way in trying to make Zamfara better.” He described the university as the first and only institution offering health sciences and medical technology in Nigeria, filling a gap in access to sophisticated medical equipment.
Professor Yakasai affirmed the university’s need for continued support, stating, “The university needs your support. Most importantly, we want to take off. I have visited the school and seen the renovation work that has been done. We currently don’t have any challenges. I firmly believe that you will provide us with 100% support. This is your university, and together we will take it to greater heights.”
