US lawmaker slams Biden for removing Nigeria from religious freedom watchlist
U.S. Representative Nancy Mace slammed the former Biden administration for its handling of international religious freedom, posting on X that “Nigeria has become one of the deadliest countries in the world for Christians.” She highlighted that Biden’s team removed Nigeria from the State Department’s *Country of Particular Concern (CPC)* list, a designation for nations with severe religious‑liberty violations.Mace contrasted this with former President Donald Trump’s stance, noting “President Trump is working to reverse those decisions. 45/47 remains one of the most consequential presidents in American history.” Her remarks follow Trump’s recent claim on Truth Social that Christianity in Nigeria faces an “existential threat” from radical Islamist groups, that “thousands of Christians are being killed,” and his announcement to redesignate Nigeria as a CPC country while directing the Pentagon to prepare possible military options against terrorist groups.
Trump’s comments drew condemnation from Nigeria’s government, which insisted the country guarantees freedom of religion, and from global powers like China and Russia urging respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty. Nigeria was first placed on the CPC list in December 2020 under Trump and was removed by the Biden administration in November 2021.
