US embassy Abuja, Lagos consulate closed Monday for ‘Presidents’ Day’

In honour of Presidents' Day, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2026.

In a notice posted on its official X website on Sunday, the mission announced this.

Originally created to commemorate George Washington's birthday, Presidents' Day has evolved into a celebration of all US presidents and their contributions to the nation's history, according to the embassy.

The official holiday also acknowledges the impact of U.S. presidents on world affairs, the embassy said.

In a related message, the embassy shared a historical fact about Washington, saying he created the first “Badge of Military Merit,” which later became the Purple Heart.

It added that the Purple Heart medal still bears Washington’s image today.

Presidents’ Day is observed annually in the United States as a federal holiday.
