UNILAG reduces fees following a meeting between the Vice-Chancellor and NANS

After a meeting between the University of Lagos (UNILAG) management and representatives from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday, the university has decided to reduce its fees.

During the meeting, UNILAG's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, along with other university officials and NANS President Comrade Usman Umar Barambu, along with other NANS executives, and faculty leaders from nine different faculties of the university and the College of Medicine, discussed various issues.

Among the issues discussed were the demands put forth by the students, which included the reversal of mandatory fees, reduction of hostel fees, and the reinstatement of the Students' Union Government in UNILAG.

Following the meeting, UNILAG announced a reduction in its fees as part of its response to the students' demands.

Nonetheless, Ogunsola emphasized that the university's primary objective was to provide quality education to all its students, irrespective of their social class, ethnicity, or religious beliefs.

Following a thorough assessment of the concerns raised by both students and the university management during the meeting, the following consensus was reached: Utility charges for all student categories have been lowered from N20,000:00 to N15,000:00.

"The mandatory fees for incoming undergraduate students have been revised from N126,325:00 to N116,325:00 for courses without lab/studio and from N176,325:00 to N166,325:00 for courses with lab/studio.

"The mandatory fees for returning undergraduate students have been adjusted as follows: N80,750:00 for courses without lab/studio, N120,250:00 for courses with lab/studio, and N170,250:00 for Medical/Pharmacy students and students in Health Professions.

The Convocation Fee for all final year students has been reduced to N27,000:00 from N30,000:00. Hostel fees have been revised as follows: Undergraduate hostels in Akoka and Yaba campuses now cost N43,000:00, down from N90,000:00.

Hostels in Idi-Araba campus are now priced at N65,000:00, down from N120,000:00, while the fee for Sodeinde Hall has been reduced to N135,000:00 from N250,000:00."

"On Wednesday, a group of University of Lagos students took to the streets to voice their opposition to the recently increased tuition fees implemented by the university's administration. The fee hike, which was announced in July, applies to both new and returning undergraduate students and was attributed to the prevailing economic challenges."
