UNIBEN Suspends Student Union Following Attack on Labour Party Gubernatorial Candidate
The University of Benin management has decided to suspend the Student Union Government indefinitely.
In a statement released on Monday by the university’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, it was explained that the suspension is linked to an attack on Edo State Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate, Olumide Akpata, by some students believed to be affiliated with the student union.
The suspension became effective on Monday, April 29, 2024.
The statement said, “The university management has reviewed the report from the panel investigating the incidents that occurred at the Faculty of Law and the University’s Senior Staff Club on Friday, April 12, 2024.”
"Following a thorough review of the report, the Vice Chancellor has approved the suspension of the university's Student Union."
"The suspension, which is indefinite, is effective immediately, starting from Monday, April 29, 2024.
"Consequently, all Student Union officers must return all union property in their possession to the Dean of Student Affairs by no later than 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2024."
"In the meantime, a Caretaker Committee made up of representatives from faculties, schools, and institutes has been approved to oversee student activities during the suspension period.
"The Vice Chancellor's directive is being communicated to the university community for their awareness and for compliance by the former union officers."
