Emirates flight EK9788, arriving from Dubai around 03:50 local time (19:50 GMT), veered off course during landing and struck an airport patrol vehicle.
Both occupants of the vehicle died, while all four crew members aboard the aircraft survived.
The crash is one of Hong Kong’s most serious aviation incidents in recent years, as the airport is known for its strong safety record.
Authorities have begun an investigation to determine why the plane deviated from its landing path. Airport officials stated that the aircraft had been given correct landing instructions and that runway guidance signs were in place.
Authorities have opened an investigation to determine why the plane veered off course during landing.
Airport officials maintain that proper landing instructions were issued and that all necessary runway guidance markings were clearly in place.
Airport operations executive director Steven Yiu said.
“Normally the plane is not supposed to turn towards the sea,” he said at a news conference hours after the incident.
“The plane did not send out a distress signal when it was landing,” he added.
He emphasized that the airport patrol vehicle “definitely did not enter the runway without authorization.”
