Trader To Clean Court Premises For Stealing In Lagos
On Friday, a trader named Yusuf Dauda was ordered by a Magistrates Court in Ogudu, Lagos State, to clean the court premises for 20 hours as punishment for stealing a bag of onions. Magistrate O.A Daodu sentenced Dauda, along with Moses Enumah, 33, who pleaded guilty to the offence, while Enumah maintained his innocence.
The charges against the suspect included two counts of conspiracy and theft. Daodu specified that Dauda should be cautioned and discharged after completing the 20 hours of community service, the discretion of which would be with the officer in charge.
During the court proceedings, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Bassey Sunday, revealed that the offence occurred on September 30 at the Mile 12 Market in the Ketu area of Lagos State, around 3:00 p.m. Dauda stole a plastic paint bucket of onions valued at N6,000 from the shop of Sani Adamu, while Enumah took a quarter bag of onions worth N13,000 from the shop of Sulaimon Abubakar. Both were apprehended by market security when the complainants raised an alarm.
The prosecutor stated that the offence violated the provisions of sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Enumah was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum, and the case was adjourned until November 10 for trial.
