Tinubu postpones G20, AU-EU summits amid security concerns

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has delayed his planned trip to attend significant international summits in South Africa and Angola, choosing instead to wait for additional security updates concerning recent assaults and kidnappings nationwide.

This information was shared in a press statement released by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Wednesday.

Security Updates Lead to Delay of International Travel

The President was set to leave Abuja today to participate in the 20th G20 Summit of leaders in South Africa and then continue to Luanda for the 7th AU-EU Summit.

However, the Statehouse issued a statement indicating that President Tinubu has "delayed his planned trip to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, as he awaits further security updates on the kidnapped Kebbi schoolgirls and the attack on worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State."

The report highlighted that the President was "troubled by the security incidents in Kebbi State and the recent attack by bandits against worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, leading President Tinubu to decide to postpone his departure."

The President "is now awaiting reports from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi out of sympathy on his behalf, as well as updates from the police and the Department of State Services regarding the incident in Kwara."

Actions Regarding Kidnappings and the Kwara Attack

In light of the rising security concerns, President Tinubu has implemented firm measures on both matters.
Concerning the kidnapping, the President "reiterates his instruction to the security agencies to do everything possible to rescue the 24 schoolgirls, taken by the bandits, and ensure their safe return home."

After receiving a request from the Governor of Kwara State, President Tinubu "directed the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area of the state and instructed the police to pursue the bandits responsible for the attack on worshippers."
