Tinubu asks minister to relocate to Kebbi over schoolgirls’ abduction

President Bola Tinubu has instructed the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to move to Kebbi State following the kidnapping of 24 schoolgirls in the area.

Mr. Matawalle, who previously served as the governor of Zamfara State, has been directed to stay in Kebbi to oversee security measures aimed at securing the release of the kidnapped students.

At around 4 am on Monday, gunmen took 24 students from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School located in Maga town, Kebbi State.

Mr. Matawalle is anticipated to arrive in Birni-Kebbi on Friday, bringing with him experience in addressing banditry and mass kidnappings from his time as governor of Zamfara State from 2019 to 2023.

On February 26, 2021, armed bandits kidnapped 279 female students, aged between 10 and 17, from the Government Girls Science Secondary School, a boarding institution in Jangebe, Zamfara State. The bandits released all the captives on March 2, 2021.
