Tinubu Reacts to Death of Nigeria's First Chartered Accountant, Chief Akintola Williams

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences following the passing of Nigeria's first chartered accountant, Chief Akintola Williams, often referred to as the "doyen of accounting." Chief Williams, who reached the age of 104, passed away at his Lagos residence on Monday.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu extended his sympathy to Chief Williams' family, friends, and associates. He also conveyed his condolences to the governments of Lagos and Ogun States, as well as organizations like the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAN) and the Nigerian Stock Exchange, which were established by Chief Williams.

President Tinubu praised Chief Williams for his integrity, resilience, and resourcefulness. He highlighted Chief Williams' historic achievement in establishing the first African-owned accounting firm, Akintola Williams & Co (Deloitte & Touche), in 1952, which inspired confidence in a generation of professionals and contributed to transparency and competence in the accounting profession.

The President acknowledged the numerous honors and awards Chief Williams received during his lifetime, including the OFR and NNOM awards, but emphasized that they only partially reflected his substantial contributions to Nigeria and humanity. Chief Williams' investments in education and healthcare institutions, especially for the most vulnerable citizens, were noted.

President Tinubu also highlighted Chief Williams' significant roles in the public service, including chairing the Federal Income Tax Appeal Commissioners, serving on the Coker Commission of Inquiry, and leading the Public Service Review Panel to address issues with the Udoji Salary Review Commission.

The President fondly recalled sending birthday wishes to Chief Williams on his 104th birthday in August and recognized his profound impact on Nigeria and Africa through the establishment of various institutions that have shaped the African economy.

President Tinubu concluded by offering prayers for Chief Williams' soul and extended his support to the grieving family.
