The NIMC commits to a smooth NIN registration process for everyone
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has provided reassurance to Nigerians regarding a seamless National Identification Number (NIN) registration process, both within the nation and for citizens in the diaspora.
Mrs. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the acting Director-General of NIMC, conveyed this assurance in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.
She emphasized that NIN registration remains free of charge for all eligible citizens and reiterated the commission's dedication to ensuring accessibility for all Nigerians, aligning with international best practices.
Furthermore, the new NIMC head articulated the commission's commitment to establishing a comprehensive national identity system that would streamline government services and improve service delivery.
Coker-Odusote emphasized that a unified identity system would facilitate more efficient delivery of services to citizens, ensuring they receive the entitlements they deserve.
She stated that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) would enhance the oversight and regulation of various aspects related to national identity, encompassing services like NIN enrollment, national e-ID card issuance, identity verification, data harmonization, and authentication.
She emphasized that in the digital era, a cohesive identity system is the foundation of e-governance initiatives, creating a conducive environment for government programs such as social safety nets, financial inclusion, and for businesses seeking to offer innovative products and services to the populace.
Furthermore, an integrated identity system would fortify the government's financial management, foster good governance, and promote transparency by ensuring inclusivity and social equity. It would prevent marginalized and vulnerable groups from being excluded from government services.
The acting director general recognized the challenges faced by millions of Nigerians during NIN enrollment and assured that all issues, including lengthy processing times and administrative errors, would be thoroughly addressed and resolved.
She appealed for understanding and support from all stakeholders in Nigeria's digital identity realm and reiterated the commission's commitment to expediting NIN issuance and the provision of other supplementary services to the public.
Coker-Odusote also affirmed NIMC's dedication to supporting President Bola Tinubu's administration's policy direction, particularly by streamlining NIN issuance in alignment with the president's commitment to lifting more Nigerians out of poverty, enhancing food security, driving economic growth, and bolstering security.
