The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has announced that the Nigeria Police has ceased the issuance
The Police high command has officially halted the issuance of licenses for small arms in the country.
During a meeting with AIG's and Commissioners of Police at the Abuja headquarters, the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, revealed this decision while responding to questions from newsmen.
Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Egbetokun stated, "We are currently mopping up arms in circulation. The country already has too many arms in circulation, and if we continue to issue licenses for more, we might exacerbate the problems we are trying to solve."
Currently, there is a temporary ban on issuing firearms licenses nationwide. However, the possibility of reviewing this decision in the future remains open.
The control of firearms in Nigeria has been governed by the Firearm Act over the past years.
As per the Act, it is stipulated that no individual shall possess or have control over any firearm or ammunition unless they possess a valid license issued by the President or the Inspector General of Police.
