Reps to donate 50% of salaries to fight hunger

In a plenary session on Thursday, the House of Representatives pledged to give up 50% of their wages for six months to combat hunger across the country.

During the session presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu revised the proposal, requesting his colleagues to forego half of their wages. When it was his turn to speak, he asked for their support for this gesture.

"This government is doing its best, but one year is insufficient to handle the difficulties confronting the country. I'd like to ask our colleagues to make a 50% sacrifice for six months.

"Our monthly compensation is N600,000. I'd want to request that we forego 50% of our salaries for six months," Kalu stated.

With each member donating N300,000 to a shared purse, the legislative chamber will contribute N108 million to the Federal Government monthly and N648 million over six months.
