Private Hospital Facility Closed Due to Administering Unscreened Blood to Patients
A private medical facility situated in Ago-Okota, within the Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos State, has been shuttered for reportedly acquiring and administering unscreened and unlabeled blood to patients.
The closure was enforced by the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS) and the State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), as reported by Naija News.
Dr. Bodunrin Osikomaiya, the Executive Secretary of the LSBTS, informed reporters over the weekend that the facility's operations were halted based on information provided by a concerned citizen. She emphasized that the closure was a result of the facility's violation of blood transfusion service laws, coupled with unethical and unprofessional medical practices that endangered the lives of unsuspecting citizens.
According to Osikomaiya, the facility breached Law 10, item 31 of the Blood Transfusion Service law, which explicitly states that no person within Lagos State should transfuse blood into a patient unless the blood has been screened, tested, labeled by the state blood transfusion committee, and confirmed negative for all transmissible diseases, including HIV I and II, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis, and any other deemed necessary by LSBTS.
The LSBTS Executive Secretary mentioned that the pertinent details of blood donors and transfusion recipients had been obtained from the facility's management. She stressed the state's zero tolerance for the collection and transfusion of unsafe blood and blood products, and efforts were underway to trace individuals who had received unscreened blood for health assessments.
Osikomaiya asserted that the implicated hospital's management and staff would face prosecution in accordance with applicable laws. She urged citizens to actively support efforts against unsafe blood transfusion services by promptly reporting any infractions or unwholesome practices they observe.
Furthermore, she appealed to health workers and stakeholders within the blood transfusion chain, including blood banks, donation centers, and logistics firms, to adhere strictly to WHO regulations and Lagos State Blood Transfusion laws governing blood donation, collection, and transfusion.
