Police arraign suspect over Bumpa co-founder Teejay Opayele’s death

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed Abiola Odutayo's arraignment in connection with the death of Adetunji Opayele, co-founder of Bumpa, also known as Teejay.

Opayele, 32, died in a tragic road accident on March 4, 2025, causing widespread public concern.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, Odutayo was arraigned on March 12, 2025, at Court 1, Tinubu, after being released from the hospital.  She faces charges for reckless and careless driving on a public highway, which resulted in Opayele's death.

"The Lagos State Police Command acknowledges public concern about the tragic accident that killed Adetunji Opayele (Teejay).  We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those affected by this loss," the statement read.

The newspaper additionally reported that "following a thorough investigation, Abiola Odutayo was arraigned for driving on a public highway in a reckless and careless manner, without due care and attention to other road users, thereby causing the death of Opayele."

The court granted Odutayo bail and scheduled the case for April 16, 2025.  The police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining transparency, fairness, and justice in the case.

Opayele's death has sparked widespread outrage, with reports claiming that Odutayo failed to yield or assist the critically injured victim, citing concerns about staining her vehicle.  Witnesses also claimed that bystanders struggled to obtain medical help because multiple hospitals allegedly refused to treat Opayele.

In response, more than 35,000 Nigerians have signed a petition demanding justice, with many calling for more serious charges, such as manslaughter, rather than reckless driving.  Petitioners have urged the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to conduct a thorough investigation and pursue appropriate charges.

As the legal proceedings progress, calls for stricter measures against reckless driving and improved emergency response systems in Lagos continue to gain traction.
