Pilots, Air Transport, Bank Staff, and More Prepare for Nationwide Strike

Several associations within the aviation and banking sectors have affirmed their support for the nationwide strike proposed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

These associations, being affiliated with either NLC or TUC, have stated their commitment to complying with the directives of organized labor, even if it entails the shutdown of airports and banks.

The NLC and TUC jointly announced the commencement of a nationwide strike from October 3, 2023, following the Federal Government's failure to effectively implement policies to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians, particularly in response to the removal of the subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit.

Among their demands, the NLC and TUC are requesting wage adjustments, the implementation of relief measures, tax exemptions, and allowances for public sector employees, as well as a review of the minimum wage.

During a virtual National Executive Council meeting held on Zoom, Joe Ajaero, the National President of NLC, informed members that a meeting with TUC officials had taken place to discuss a collaborative approach.

Despite initial objections from some NLC members, preparations for the strike are underway. The President of the National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, Elliot Ibie, confirmed their intention to participate in the strike as NLC affiliates, emphasizing that all members would be involved.

Similarly, the President of the National Union of Air Transport Employees, Ben Nnabue, stated their commitment to the NLC's declaration.

Oluwole Olusoji, President of the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions, mentioned their obligation as TUC affiliates, expressing the expectation that the government would promptly translate its public statements into action.

Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria's Head of Media, John Ikemefule, confirmed the shutdown of ports and jetties by maritime workers.

Deputy President of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Emmanuel Jaja, stated their readiness to follow directives from TUC, their labor center, when issued.
