Pay taxes to sustain Abuja infrastructure, Wike tells residents
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, has encouraged Abuja residents and business owners to fulfill their tax obligations on time, highlighting that reliable tax payments are essential for maintaining the ongoing infrastructure initiatives in the city and its vicinity.Wike made this request on Monday during the inauguration of new road and drainage initiatives in Asokoro Extension.
He indicated that tax revenue is pivotal to governmental efforts in providing quality roads, drainage systems, street lighting, and other public amenities. He stressed that paying taxes is both a civic responsibility and an investment in the community's welfare.
Wike employed a local metaphor to underline the necessity of proper funding, explaining: “All these excellent roads, drainage systems, and street lights wouldn’t be achievable without your tax contributions. This soup is delicious, but it takes money to make it. Without money to purchase the right ingredients, the soup won’t be appetizing. Similarly, if we lack finances, we cannot create the kind of city Abuja deserves.”
He then delivered a clear call to action, saying: “By paying your taxes, you are purchasing comfort, safety, and pride for Abuja. So, let’s each contribute to making this city the pride of the nation.”
The Minister clarified that the projects are aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope infrastructure initiative, aiming to enhance Abuja's competitiveness with other major cities worldwide.
Wike reiterated the commitment to high standards, asserting: “This government is dedicated to ensuring that the FCT can compete favorably with other global cities.”
He further credited the advancements to the current leadership, remarking: “What you witness in developed nations isn’t magic; it’s the outcome of committed leadership. This is what Mr. President has introduced to Abuja.”
In the last ten days, Wike has inaugurated multiple projects throughout the FCT, including roads, water supply systems, and street lighting.
He stated that the Asokoro project demonstrates the government's resolve to develop every area of the capital, assuring residents: “Without suitable road systems, drainage, and lighting, life becomes challenging. However, once these projects are finished, Asokoro will be among the most attractive neighborhoods in Abuja.”
Wike also mentioned that the current projects have generated employment for thousands of young individuals through the construction companies active across the city, affirming: “Everywhere you turn, construction is underway, providing jobs for our youth. This is part of the Renewed Hope initiative.”
He added that the FCT Administration will soon commence the rehabilitation of 40 schools and launch new initiatives in the health sector, pledging: “We’ve addressed transportation, roads, sports, and education. Now we’re shifting focus to health. No sector will be overlooked.”
The Minister appealed for continued public support and patience, stating that progress requires time and resources.
Wike finished with an optimistic perspective: “The Abuja of two years ago is not the same as today, and by tomorrow, it will improve even further.”
