Pastor and Brother in Akwa Ibom Sentenced to Death for Murder
The Akwa Ibom State High Court in Essien Udim local government Area has issued a death sentence to Pastor Uduak Umoren and his brother, Emmanuel Umoren, for fatally assaulting Iboro Joe during a dispute over a piece of land.
The victim, a 45-year-old farmer and trader from Ikot Otu in Essien Udim LGA, was brutally attacked when he went to Adiasim Ikot Ekon, also in Essien Udim LGA, to offer condolences to his sister-in-law following her husband's demise.
According to the sister-in-law's testimony, she requested the deceased to accompany her to her late husband's farmland to assess its value for sale in preparation for his burial. However, when the wife of the second convict spotted them, she informed her husband that someone was attempting to perform harmful rituals on their family land.
Upon reaching the farmland, the second convict initiated the assault on the deceased. His wife summoned her son and brother-in-law, who joined in the attack, inflicting injuries on the deceased using a machete and broken bottles.
The victim was subjected to a severe beating, rendering him unconscious, and he was subsequently transported to his family residence near the farm. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries three days later.
In her verdict on the case, Justice Winifred Effiong, the presiding judge, determined that both accused parties were guilty of murder. Accordingly, she sentenced them to death by hanging, stating that the prosecution team from the State Ministry of Justice had convincingly established their guilt, and the accused had intentionally caused the death of the deceased.
