OpenAI unveils plan to protect local energy costs

OpenAI unveiled its Stargate Community strategy on Tuesday, which aims to balance energy use and prevent its operations from raising local communities' electricity bills.

The $500 billion Stargate project is a multi-year endeavour to construct AI data centres for inference and training.

When it was first introduced in January 2025, US President Donald Trump endorsed it, and it is supported by significant investors like Oracle.

A number of tech businesses are making direct investments in power infrastructure to accommodate larger and more numerous data centres, since the rise of AI is increasingly constrained by energy access.

OpenAI said each Stargate site will now feature a locally tailored community plan, developed based on community input and local concerns.

"Depending on the site, this can range from adding and paying for new energy generation and transmission resources to bringing new dedicated power and storage that the project fully funds," the statement continued.

OpenAI's statement comes after Microsoft announced a similar project last week, which aims to minimise the impact of possible electricity price increases on local communities and reduce water usage at its U.S. data centres.

Microsoft has stated that it will work with local utilities to boost supplies as needed for its data centres and pay utility rates high enough to cover its power costs.
