Nigerian gold medalist takes on the role of a voluntary Lagos road worker

Bassey Etim, also known as Ironbar, a Nigerian gold medallist, has found a unique way to utilize his abundant energy by working on roads in the Ajah area of Lagos State as a voluntary road worker.

While it remains uncertain if this has been his primary means of livelihood, during an interview with TikTok user @_egungun, our correspondent witnessed the weightlifter receiving money from a grateful motorist who appreciated his hard work in repairing the collapsed road.

Dressed in an all-black attire and holding a shovel, Etim demonstrated his dedication as he used his formidable strength to lift a stone and used it to block a troublesome pothole on the damaged road. He expressed that his journey into weightlifting was driven by a desire to make a positive impact on society.

Notably, Etim's talent and dedication led him to achieve a gold medal for Lagos State during his first competition at the 1981 National World Festival.

In his own words, Bassey Etim, also known as IronBar, introduced himself, "I am Bassey Etim from Cross Rivers State, born in 1965. During my youth, I found myself getting into trouble, but I made a conscious choice to transform that negative energy into something positive."

Consequently, I decided to take up weightlifting, and my debut competition was in the 1981 National World Festival, where I proudly secured the gold medal for Lagos State."

Additionally, the gold medallist revealed to @_egungun that he has been engaging in voluntary road works for the past seven years.

As a parting gesture, @_egungun presented Etim with a heartwarming gift, handing over N50,000 while offering heartfelt prayers for his success in all future endeavors.

Etim's face beamed with joy and gratitude as the video clip came to a close.
