Denmark remained the least corrupt country, scoring 89 points, followed by Finland (88), Singapore (84), and New Zealand and Norway (81 each). No African nation reached the top ten..

Seychelles (68), Cabo Verde (62), and Botswana (58) were Africa's least corrupt countries. The three most corrupt countries in the world were South Sudan, Somalia, and Venezuela.

According to Transparency International CEO Maíra Martini, the worldwide average has reached a new low of 42, with over two-thirds of countries scoring less than 50.

She warned of a "concerning picture of long-term decline in leadership to tackle corruption," saying that even established democracies such as the United States, United Kingdom, and New Zealand had suffered performance declines.

Martini asked governments to take action against abuses of power and to defend civic space, emphasising that anti-government uprisings around the world demonstrate that people are "fed up with unaccountable leadership and demanding reform."
