Nigeria, Sierra Leone seal MoUs to boost W’Africa digital economy
Nigeria has strengthened its regional digital collaboration following a visit by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, who led a distinguished delegation to Sierra Leone for the Nigeria–Sierra Leone Digital Economy Bilateral Trade Mission.
The mission culminated in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding aimed at enhancing innovation, cybersecurity, and digital trade across borders.
This two-day mission underscored Nigeria’s growing role in shaping the digital landscape of West Africa, coming soon after Dr. Tijani's participation in the Regional Summit on Digital Transformation held in the Republic of Benin.
Activities in Freetown included extensive tours of local ecosystems, high-level government discussions, and technical sessions that centered on digital public infrastructure, broadband expansion, advancements in artificial intelligence, and vital collaboration with the private sector.
Both nations reiterated their shared dedication to regional digital integration, fostering youth innovation, ensuring robust connectivity, and the long-term goal of developing a more inclusive digital economy in West Africa.
“Nigeria is wholeheartedly devoted to fostering a more unified, secure, and innovative digital region. Our relationship with Sierra Leone transcends bilateral engagement; it reflects a broader aspiration to ensure technology, talent, and trade flow unobstructedly across our continent,” the minister stated.
“Together, we are establishing a digital economy that empowers our youth and fosters shared prosperity,” he added.
The agreements signed by both nations specifically focused on digital public infrastructure, broadband development, spectrum collaboration, advancements in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, as well as talent cultivation and building institutional capacity.
Private sector representatives from both Nigeria and Sierra Leone also formalized partnership agreements in key areas such as fintech, edtech, healthtech, cloud infrastructure, and initiatives for start-up exchanges.
Companies like IHS Towers, Flutterwave, CcHUB, Miden, Cybervergent, Prunedge, Itana, and Awarri participated in specialized business matching sessions that aimed to enhance cross-border innovation and broaden digital services in both countries.
Sierra Leone’s Minister of Communication, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Salima Monorma Bah, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership and pointed out its potential to expedite her country’s digital transformation initiatives.
She acknowledged the historical ties between the two nations and the opportunity to leverage their shared past to advance the digital economy of the continent.
As per her remarks, this collaboration presents a solid foundation for deeper integration, enhanced institutional capacity, and greater involvement of young people and businesses in the digital space.
The Nigerian contingent included leaders from key digital organizations such as Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency; Prof Ibrahim Adeyanju, Managing Director and Chief Executive of Galaxy Backbone; Dr. Olubunmi Ajala, National Coordinator of the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics; and Victoria Fabunmi, National Coordinator of the Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation.
Both governments reiterated their commitments to enhancing collaboration, expanding digital infrastructure, and cultivating a cohesive West African innovation ecosystem that fosters economic resilience and mutual prosperity.
