Nigeria's July Petrol Consumption Slips to 52 Million Litres from 64 Million
According to recent data disclosed by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and obtained by DAILY POST, the average daily consumption of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, in Nigeria decreased to 52 million litres during July. This marks a decline from the previous month's consumption of 64 million litres. This change has been attributed to the removal of the petrol subsidy, a decision made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, which resulted in a national increase in PMS prices by over N600 per litre.
The fuel subsidy removal, introduced in June, contributed to the drop in daily fuel consumption from 64,964,000 litres in the previous month to 52 million litres in July. The accuracy of Nigeria's daily fuel consumption figures has been a subject of contention, prompting the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) to commit to conducting a study to establish more precise data.
