NLC opposes NSSTF bill, cites threat to workers’ right
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the proposed Nigeria Social Security Trust Fund (NSSTF) bill, warning that it could lead to the mismanagement of workers' contributions and undermine their role in managing social security funds. In a letter to the Senate President, the NLC expressed strong condemnation of the bill, labeling it a "brazen and unpatriotic act of class warfare" and a "grave assault on the principles of tripartism". The union argues that the bill aims to dismantle the tripartite governance framework, which guarantees balanced representation for government, employers, and workers.
The NLC emphasizes that workers' representation on the board is non-negotiable and demands that their representation be increased to three seats. The union warns that failure to address their concerns could trigger direct action, including national mobilization of its members.
The NLC criticizes the bill for centralizing power, creating ambiguity, and establishing a direct channel for political interference. The union urges the Senate to abandon the legislation, warning against using the legislative process to alienate and impoverish Nigerian workers.
