NIMASA, Chatham House partner to strengthen Gulf of Guinea security
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and Chatham House in London have reached an agreement to address maritime security issues in the Gulf of Guinea.According to Arise News, it intends to bring the issue before the United Nations Security Council.
This was revealed in a statement issued by NIMASA following a meeting between the Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, and the Director of the Africa Programme at Chatham House, Dr. Alex Vines.
Mobereola, in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by NIMASA's Head of Public Relations, Osagie Edward, stated that the agency and Chatham House had also begun working together to organise a meeting of international stakeholders from both the public and private sectors in Nigeria.
Mobereola led his team, which included Nigeria's Alternate Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organisation, Bwala William, and stated that the goal was to prepare a position paper on maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
The NIMASA DG emphasised the importance of effective international cooperation in ensuring the Gulf of Guinea's security.
He stated, "We had a very fruitful discussion with the team at Chatham House." The decision to engage the UN Security Council is to keep them informed of the progress made in terms of security in the Gulf of Guinea.
"We also need an independent analysis of the security situation in the Gulf of Guinea and how to best translate the gains in terms of enhanced security into tangible economic benefits such as lowering the cost of all Nigerian-bound freight and resolving issues with the payment of war risk insurance premiums for Nigerian-bound vessels.
"The coming on board of Chatham House will serve as a catalyst in developing our blue economy."
For the past century, Chatham House has provided impartial analysis and trusted discourse to help people, societies, and governments understand and adapt to change.
