NAFDAC shuts unhygienic depot, seals drink factory in Kaduna
The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control has acted in Kaduna State by closing down a depot due to unsanitary conditions and sealing a beverage manufacturing facility.
While speaking to reporters on Saturday in Kaduna, the state coordinator of NAFDAC, Nasiru Mato, mentioned that the agency has intensified monitoring of the production, distribution, and sale of regulated products to ensure their quality, safety, and effectiveness, in line with its mission to protect consumer health in the state.
Mr. Mato disclosed that, based on reliable information, a team of regulatory officials from the NAFDAC Kaduna State office, led by himself, took immediate action and discovered a depot operating under unsanitary conditions for the storage of yogurt and flavored drinks before they were distributed. He stressed that such practices were unsatisfactory and unacceptable because they contravened standard regulations, adding that the risk of product contamination is high under those storage conditions. As a result, he stated that the facility was shut down as an initial measure of enforcement.
In a related case, Mr. Mato reported that another inspection of a manufacturer of sachet water and water-based beverages also revealed that the existing systems and processes could not ensure the quality, safety, and wholesomeness of the products. He pointed out that both good manufacturing practices and hygienic practices had been compromised; therefore, the facility was also placed on hold as a preliminary measure of enforcement.
Mr. Mato underscored the importance for manufacturers of all types of regulated products to consistently comply with established operating procedures and good manufacturing practices, warning that any breach would lead to severe legal consequences.
