Meta to begin new round of employee lay off today

Meta will begin a new round of company-wide layoffs today while increasing recruitment efforts for machine learning engineers, according to internal memos released on Friday.

Notices will be sent to affected employees beginning at 5 a.m. local time on Monday in most countries, including the United States, according to a memo from Janelle Gale, Meta's Head of People.

Employees in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will be exempt from the cuts due to local labour regulations. Employees in more than a dozen other countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa will receive notifications between February 11 and February 18.

Last month, the company announced plans to lay off approximately 5% of its lowest-performing employees, with some positions set to be filled. The latest memo, in which Gale described the dismissals as "performance terminations," was first reported by The Information.

Unlike previous rounds of layoffs, Meta's offices will remain open on Monday, with no further updates on the restructuring, according to Gale.

Meanwhile, in a separate memo issued on Friday, Peng Fan, Meta's Vice President of Engineering for Monetisation, urged employees to support a streamlined hiring process for machine learning engineers and other critical technical positions. The hiring campaign will last from February 11 to March 13.

"Thank you for your continued support in helping us achieve our accelerated hiring goals and better align with our company's priorities for 2025," Fan said in a letter.
