The Lagos State Government is considering partnering with the Portuguese construction firm Mota-Engil Consortium to build the proposed Lekki-Epe International Airport. This initiative seeks to alleviate congestion at Murtala Mohammed International Airport and improve infrastructure along the Lekki-Epe corridor.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is currently on a two-day working visit to Portugal, announced the news on Wednesday via his official X account.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated that the Lagos State Government is considering Mota-Engil for the Lekki-Epe International Airport project due to the company's proven track record of delivering major infrastructure projects throughout Africa.
Notably, Mota-Engil has completed significant projects in Europe, including the Porto International Airport—Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport.
"In an effort to attract skilled, trustworthy, and capable foreign investors to support the THEMES+ development agenda, I led a delegation on a two-day working visit to Portugal. Our primary focus was the Mota-Engil Consortium, which is one of Europe's largest construction companies.
"During our visit, we toured the Porto International Airport (Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport), which was built by Mota-Engil and was truly impressive. We also went to their waste management facilities and real estate operations, which gave us a lot of information and insight. Mota-Engil has a strong track record of completing large infrastructure projects in Africa, which speaks volumes about their capabilities.
"We are looking into potential collaborations for the proposed Lekki-Epe International Airport. "This strategic initiative aims to alleviate congestion at Murtala Mohammed International Airport and improve infrastructure along the Lekki-Epe corridor," Gov. Sanwo-Olu tweeted.
The Lagos State Government has long sought to build a new airport in the Lekki axis, which is designated as one of the state's four key growth corridors. This development is intended to promote economic growth and improve connectivity in the area.
According to previous reports, the proposed Lekki International Airport is expected to cost around $450 million in its first phase, with preliminary plans dating back to 2012.
In 2022, the Lagos State Government received Federal Government approval for the airport's construction, which was officially announced by then-Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika at the Lagos Economic Summit at the Eko Hotel and Suites.
