Lagos to name, shame hotels, vendors who cancel bookings for higher bids

The Lagos State Government has issued a strong warning to hotels, restaurants, and event venues against unjustified increases in prices and the cancellation of confirmed reservations during the ongoing Detty December celebrations.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed this during an interview with TVC News on Monday.

He stated that the government will no longer accept vendors breaking prior commitments simply because they have received higher offers, stating that such unethical practices harm Lagos’ reputation as a premier cultural and tourism destination.

“This behavior is unacceptable and will not be permitted in Lagos. If a commitment has been made, particularly where deposits or agreements are involved, vendors are obliged to honor it. Cancelling bookings for better offers undermines trust and damages the image of our city.”

“If someone has reserved a table at a restaurant over the past four months and you have assured them of its availability, why all of a sudden are they told something has changed because someone is offering more money? This is not what we will permit or tolerate in Lagos. You are tarnishing our name and the reputation of our city.”

“Not only will we name and shame those engaging in this behavior, but the government will also take significant action against them,” he cautioned.

He indicated that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, along with the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), has been fully informed and is ready to step in.

Members of the public with evidence of violated agreements, canceled bookings, or unexpected price hikes after confirmation are encouraged to report such instances. Authorities stated that complaints will be investigated initially to resolve the issue, after which legal actions may be pursued if necessary.

He acknowledged being aware of some venues already participating in these practices and mentioned that discussions have taken place to prevent a recurrence.

As Detty December continues to attract thousands of tourists and entertainment enthusiasts to Lagos, the government has reaffirmed its dedication to protecting consumers and ensuring a fair, transparent, and hospitable environment for all visitors.
