Lagos cracks down on unapproved estate developments

The Lagos State Government has issued a final caution to real estate developers who are operating without authorized layout plans.

During a recent enforcement and awareness tour along the Eti-Osa corridor, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, communicated this notice, explaining that the warning comes after the previous grace period for the identified estates to rectify their planning documents has expired.

He stated, “The State Government has consistently highlighted the importance of obtaining proper approvals from all estate promoters before they initiate land subdivision, sales, or construction. The estates in question have continued to violate planning regulations despite prior notifications and the government will not accept developments that jeopardize organized and sustainable urban growth.”

The Commissioner emphasized that the one-week final notice issued to the concerned estates serves as their last opportunity to present their layout plans and obtain the needed approvals.

He noted, “Following the deadline, the government will implement appropriate measures, ranging from substantial fines to demolitions, based on the severity of each violation. It is crucial for the public, particularly potential homebuyers, to always check the planning status of any estate prior to investing funds, as performing due diligence is vital to avoid financial losses.”

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing planning regulations to safeguard the environment and encourage organized development throughout the state.

He reiterated, “Following the deadline, the government will implement appropriate measures, ranging from substantial fines to demolitions, based on the severity of each violation. It is crucial for the public, particularly potential homebuyers, to always check the planning status of any estate prior to investing funds, as performing due diligence is vital to avoid financial losses.”
