Lagos attorney Bolanle Lawal sentenced to death by hanging

The Lagos State High Court has delivered a verdict, condemning Drambi Vandi, a suspended police officer, to death by hanging for the murder of Lagos-based lawyer, Bolanle Raheem. This ruling was issued by Judge Ibironke Harrison on Monday, finding the police officer guilty of murder.

The court has reached a verdict of guilty on the single count of murder. You will be sentenced to death by hanging," declared Judge Harrison.

On December 25, 2022, Vanguard reported that Vandi allegedly committed the murder of Mrs. Raheem, who was pregnant at the time, near the Ajah roundabout in Lagos.

The police officer was serving at the Ajiwe police division in the Ajah area of the state.

Vandi's reprehensible actions drew widespread condemnation from Nigerians, leading to his suspension just two days after the incident.

The Lagos state government filed a single count charge of murder against the defendant and subsequently brought him to trial.

Since the court proceedings began in January, various witnesses, including the deceased's husband, sister, police armor, pathologist, and seven others, have testified against the defendant.

The prosecution presented 27 pieces of evidence.

Vandi was the sole witness who testified in his own defense.

During his court testimony, Vandi informed the judge that the bullet, which was presented in court as the one that killed Mrs. Raheem, did not originate from the rifle he had in his possession on the day of the incident.

He also asserted that he had no prior knowledge of the bullet's existence until it was presented as evidence in the courtroom.
