Kidnapping: Concerns raised as insecurity worsens in Kogi East
The Kogi East Neighborhood Watch (KENW), a community policing group, has expressed concern over the increasing insecurity in the Kogi Eastern Senatorial District.
In a statement issued by its Director of Public Communication, Wing Commander Iye Ayefu (rtd), the group accused Kogi State's Deputy Governor, Joel Salifu Oyibo, of not taking decisive action against the escalating kidnappings in Ofu Local Government Area.
The statement highlighted that kidnappings are occurring daily in broad daylight along the Ogbakpedo route between Okabo and Ochadamu in Ofu LGA. The perpetrators, often locals disguised in military camouflage, demand large ransoms. It mentioned an incident involving a staff member of Prince Abubakar Audu University Anyigba who escaped with gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja.
Despite being informed of the situation, the State Security Adviser and the Local Government Council Administrator have yet to provide effective solutions, according to the statement. Recent attacks on farmers in Ochadamu have left the community paralyzed with fear, unable to engage in farming activities.
In response to these challenges, KENW plans to mobilize security stakeholders to address the kidnapping menace. The statement commended some actions taken by the Deputy Governor and urged for sustained efforts to bring relief to the affected areas.
