Kano prison confirms transfer of death-row cleric
The Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has announced the relocation of the controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara, to another custodial facility that operates under federal authority.Musbahu K/Nassarawa, the spokesperson for the Command, issued a statement to the press clarifying that the decision to transfer the cleric was made in accordance with the operational guidelines and statutory responsibilities of the Service.
The NCoS indicated that such a decision is influenced by various administrative factors, which include security evaluations, classification of inmates, availability of facilities, and the cleric’s specific requirements for rehabilitation.
K/Nassarawa highlighted that the legal foundation for this action is explicitly defined within the country’s legal framework, stating: “The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, wants to clarify that the recent transfer of inmate Malam Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara to one of the designated federal custodial centres is a routine administrative procedure in line with the Service’s statutory responsibilities and operational guidelines.”
He elaborated on the constitutional basis for such transfers, noting: “The transfer or relocation of an inmate to a Correctional Centre with a different security classification from where they were previously held is part of the Nigerian Correctional Service’s constitutional mandate, as specified in the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, for effective inmate management across the correctional facilities in the country. These decisions are influenced by various elements including security considerations, classification of inmates, availability of facilities, and rehabilitation necessities.”
The spokesperson provided a strong assurance to the public that Sheikh Abduljabbar's well-being and legal rights are fully upheld under Nigerian legislation, despite the move. He emphasized that this transfer does not affect the cleric’s rights in any manner.
K/Nassarawa made it clear: “The public can be assured that the welfare and legal entitlements of Malam Abduljabbar continue to be fully protected by the law. The transfer does not impact his legal status, rights of appeal, or access to legal counsel in any way.”
In conclusion, he reiterated the Command’s dedication to its fundamental responsibilities: “The Controller of Kano State Command is committed to fulfilling the Service’s mandate regarding the safe custody, reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of offenders, in the interests of state security and public safety,” stated the Command’s spokesperson, K/Nassarawa. Sheikh Abduljabbar Kabara is currently engaged in a legal proceeding concerning alleged blasphemy charges.
