Instagram plans to launch standalone app for Reels

Instagram is considering launching a separate app for its short-form video feature, Reels, in order to capitalise on TikTok's uncertain future in the United States, according to a report by The Information on Wednesday.

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri reportedly revealed the move to staff this week, implying that Meta-owned Instagram intends to provide a dedicated video-scrolling experience similar to TikTok.

This is not Meta's first attempt to compete with TikTok. In January, the company introduced Edits, a video-editing app that appears to compete with TikTok's CapCut.

It also launched Lasso in 2018, a standalone short-video platform that was later discontinued due to a lack of traction.
