IGP: Federal Government Plans N100bn Housing Fund for Police Officers
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun announced that the federal government is setting up a N100 billion Police Housing Fund to address the housing challenges faced by officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
The IGP made this disclosure at the launch of the inaugural Nigerian Police Housing Summit in Abuja on Monday.
The summit, themed “Renewed Hope for Police Housing in Nigeria,” focused on the critical role that adequate housing plays in the welfare of police personnel.
In his address, the IGP highlighted that the proposed Police Housing Fund is part of the government's commitment to improving the living conditions of NPF officers. He stated that this initiative would significantly contribute to enhancing morale and operational effectiveness within the police force.
"A key topic of discussion will be the creation of a 100 billion Naira Police Housing Fund."
"Preliminary assessments are in progress, and discussions with key stakeholders and institutions have commenced," the IGP stated.
The IGP emphasized the importance of ensuring proper housing for police officers, both during and after their service, pointing out the acute housing deficit impacting over 400,000 personnel in the force.
He expressed regret that the current barracks accommodations were largely insufficient and inadequate to support the requirements of contemporary policing.
Referencing previous efforts by the NPF to tackle the housing shortage, such as the establishment of the Nigerian Police Force Property Development and Construction Co Ltd, the IGP underscored the necessity for a comprehensive reassessment and reformation of the implementation framework to sufficiently meet officers’ housing needs.
The Nigerian Police Housing Summit, according to the IGP, is a crucial forum for exploring and formulating strategies to deliver accessible and affordable housing to both active and retired members of the force.
The summit will address key topics like "Accessible Housing: A Vital Welfare Tool" and "Practical Solutions for Police Housing" to encourage the development of comprehensive solutions.
The IGP conveyed confidence that the summit would lead to prompt delivery of quality, budget-friendly housing solutions for NPF personnel, ushering in a renewed hope for police housing in Nigeria.
