Fire razes Computer Village building, millions lost

PEarly on Tuesday morning, a fire damaged a one-story business building on Somoye Street in Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos State, destroying property valued at several million naira.

According to eyewitnesses, the event happened at around midnight and involved a commercial building that housed computer and computer accessory dealers.

There were no reported casualties from the incident. However, during firefighting operations, a Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service officer suffered minor injuries. Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) personnel provided first assistance on the scene.

After receiving distress calls, members of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service quickly responded on the site and successfully confined the fire, stopping it from spreading to nearby structures.

The fire's immediate and distant causes were still unknown as of the time of publication. The main purpose of the damaged one-story commercial structure was to store and sell computers and peripherals, and the large amount of flammable materials there contributed to the fire's quick spread.

In the meantime, investigations have been started by pertinent emergency and regulatory agencies to identify the incident's cause and implement preventative measures.

The entire upper floor of the building was completely razed by the inferno.

Confirming the incident, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said all goods and properties stored in the building were totally destroyed.

He pointed out that the quick action of emergency personnel stopped the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Firefighting operations had been effectively completed as of the time of publication, although damping-down efforts to remove any remaining heat and stop re-ignition were still in progress.

As impacted business owners calculated their losses, traders, supporters, and locals were observed at the area bemoaning the situation.
