FG releases ₦2.3bn to clear ASUU salary, promotion arrears
The Federal Government has released ₦2.311 billion to settle salary and promotion arrears owed to university staff, including members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other university-based unions. The funds were released through the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, stated that President Bola Tinubu is committed to resolving welfare and funding issues in the tertiary education sector in a transparent and sustainable manner. The government has also approved the mainstreaming of the Earned Academic Allowance into university staff salaries starting from 2026.
Additionally, funds have been released for the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities, with budgetary provisions made to sustain the initiative. Dr. Alausa emphasized the government's commitment to improving academic staff welfare and addressing long-standing challenges.
The Minister assured that negotiations with ASUU and other unions are being conducted sincerely and respectfully, with a focus on finding mutually beneficial solutions. He stressed the importance of fiscal responsibility and ensuring that financial commitments are realistic and sustainable.
Dr. Alausa commended President Tinubu for his dedication to the education sector and expressed optimism that the current reforms will bring lasting industrial harmony and strengthen Nigeria's tertiary education system.
