FG insured 250,000 farmers in eight states – Report

The Presidential Food Systems Coordination Unit (PFSCU) has insured approximately 250,000 farmers across eight states in Nigeria under a risk-mitigation initiative. The insurance program, which covers the 2025 wet-season farming cycle, aims to protect smallholder farmers from climate-related shocks and market volatility that have exacerbated the country's food-security crisis.

The initiative is part of the PFSCU's efforts to rebuild Nigeria's fragile food systems and ensure that governors, ministries, and local actors work together to address food insecurity. The PFSCU is led by Marion Moon, Technical Assistant to the President on Agriculture, and is tasked with implementing the National Agribusiness Policy Mechanism.

The insurance program provides crop-failure coverage and input access to farmers in Borno, Ekiti, Enugu, Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, and Taraba states. According to the National Bureau of Statistics and the Food and Agriculture Organisation, frequent farmer exits due to climate-related losses threaten Nigeria's food-security goals.

The PFSCU plans to expand the insurance scheme nationwide by 2026 and integrate its database into the National Economic Council's live food-balance dashboard. Only three states, Ekiti, Cross River, and Jigawa, have shown significant commitment to the initiative so far.
