FG deploys 240 e-tricycles across 12 universities
The Federal Government has introduced 240 electric tricycles along with 12 solar-powered charging stations at 12 public universities.
Supported by TETFund, this initiative aims to provide students with cleaner, more economical, and dependable transportation, as announced by Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, on his official X account on Monday.
In his post, Alausa revealed that he officially initiated the E-Tricycle Deployment Programme at the University of Lagos earlier that day, referring to it as “another significant step to assist our students” with actionable and measurable solutions.
However, the Minister did not disclose the names of the other universities that would benefit from the program, apart from the University of Lagos, where the launch took place.
“Today, we have taken another significant step to assist our students under President @officialABAT, GCFR’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“I officially launched the E-Tricycle Deployment Programme of the Federal Government at the University of Lagos, providing clean, affordable, and reliable transportation options for students.
“Through @TETFundNg, we are deploying 240 E-Tricycles and 12 solar-powered charging stations across 12 public universities nationwide,” the post stated in part.
Alausa indicated that each Students’ Union Government in the chosen universities would take ownership and manage the e-tricycles, thereby ensuring reasonable fares and long-term sustainability.
He further explained that at the selected universities, each Students’ Union Government would oversee the operation of the e-tricycles, ensuring both cost-effectiveness and lasting viability.
The Minister also highlighted that this initiative would facilitate easier movement on campus daily while decreasing reliance on petrol-driven shuttles.
Alausa added that the deployment, together with the installation of solar-powered charging stations, would encourage environmental responsibility and lower carbon emissions in higher education institutions.
He expressed his appreciation to TETFund and the collaborating universities for their cooperation, mentioning that more universities might be included in future phases as the clean mobility initiative expands nationwide.
The introduction of e-tricycles and solar-powered charging stations by the Federal Government targets public universities and is part of wider efforts to promote clean energy and sustainable transportation on campuses.
