European Union to deepen security ties with Nigeria

The European Union and Nigeria are making moves to strengthen their current ties through improved defence collaboration, as part of wider efforts to tackle Nigeria’s changing security issues.

This information was shared on Wednesday, during a courtesy visit by the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr Gautier Mignot, to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

While offering his congratulations to Oluyede on his recent role, Ambassador Mignot reaffirmed the EU's dedication to assisting Nigeria in addressing its security concerns.

He emphasized, “Nigeria's significant role for the European Union, as 19 out of the EU’s 27 member states currently have diplomatic missions established in the nation.”

The Ambassador pointed out various ongoing EU-backed non-military projects throughout Nigeria that aim to foster peacebuilding, stability, and the prevention of conflicts.

He further stated, “The EU’s assistance to Nigeria encompasses more than just military support; it also includes governance, political processes, and the development of institutions, especially during a time described as complex and challenging.”

Mignot also assured the Chief of Defence Staff of the EU's willingness to enhance collaboration with Nigeria, particularly in areas that would bolster security and encourage lasting peace.

In his reply, Oluyede expressed appreciation for the EU’s ongoing support to Nigeria, acknowledging his familiarity with the different interventions and programs put forth by the union.

He praised the EU’s plan to engage Nigeria directly on security issues, rather than solely focusing its military support on the Multinational Joint Task Force.

The Chief of Defence Staff urged for the acceleration of the proposed partnerships, highlighting that Nigeria is currently facing various security dilemmas across multiple regions.

He remarked that increased and prompt EU assistance would be vital in aiding the Armed Forces and other security agencies to effectively tackle these issues.
