EFCC Reveals Names of 69 OAU Students Nabbed for Alleged Internet Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released the names of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) students arrested for suspected internet fraud. The raid in Ile-Ife, Osun State, resulted in the arrest of 69 students. The EFCC clarified that the use of water cannons and tear gas during a protest was not intended for the governor but to disperse unruly protesters.

The spokesperson for the Ibadan Zonal Command of the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, stated that the arrests followed credible intelligence on the students' involvement in fraudulent internet activities. The EFCC listed the names of the suspects and detailed items recovered, including exotic cars, 190 mobile phones, and 40 laptops.

Later reports indicated that 45 of the initially arrested students were released, with all 69 eventually regaining their freedom. The arrests sparked a protest at the EFCC office in Oyo State, where the raid was conducted.

Students and alumni of OAU criticized the EFCC's actions on social media, with the students' union condemning the arrest and harassment of students. The EFCC spokesperson assured that the suspects had made useful statements and would be charged to court after investigations were concluded.
