Cybercrime: EFCC Restores $26,000 to British Citizen
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully facilitated the return of $26,000 to Christine Brown, a British national who fell victim to online fraud.
Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesperson for the EFCC, made this announcement in a statement from Abuja. He further mentioned that the Benin Zonal Command oversaw the return of the funds to the victim on Monday.
Uwujaren elaborated that Brown conveyed her appreciation to the Commission for its diligent efforts. She acknowledged that these efforts had provided some relief after she lost her life savings to the fraudulent activities.
The statement noted that Brown, who is 70 years old, had submitted a petition to the Commission after being swindled by an internet scam artist who employed a romance scam approach.
"Detailing her unfortunate experience, Brown recounted how she became a victim when she encountered an individual who claimed to be John Barrowman, an entertainer and a citizen of the United States, through an online interaction," the statement read.
"Unbeknownst to her, he was a swindler. Brown shared that they entered into a romantic relationship, during which the fraudster initiated requests for money. She complied by sending funds through wire transfers, Bitcoin, and gift cards," Uwajaren explained.
"Kanu Idagu, the Zonal Commander, presented the recovered funds during the handover, emphasizing that the Commission remains committed to fulfilling its responsibilities for the betterment of society.
"Our efforts to restore victims of fraud whenever feasible are extensive, and we will persist in these endeavors," he affirmed.
He cautioned the public to exercise caution while engaging in online activities, as fraudsters roam the internet, targeting unsuspecting individuals for fraudulent purposes.
