Customs initiates an investigation into the officer at Lagos airport accused of soliciting a bribe

A female officer from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) was captured on camera requesting a bribe of N5,000 from a passenger at Murtala Mohammed International Airport. The officer insisted on receiving N5,000, while the passenger offered only N1,000.

In response to the incident, the NCS National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, released a statement on Tuesday, stating that the agency is actively investigating the occurrence at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. He acknowledged that the officer's actions have understandably caused public concern and emphasized the commitment to ensuring complete accountability.

He mentioned that the initial inquiry indicated that the occurrence took place at the new terminal, specifically within the departure hall of Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos. Additionally, he confirmed that the incident was recorded on video by the passenger involved, exposing an inappropriate solicitation of ₦5,000 for the expedited processing of customs procedures.

The statement continued, stating, "We would like to affirm that the implicated Officer is indeed a personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service, duly assigned to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Area Command."

"The NCS unequivocally condemns this unprofessional conduct and is committed to upholding the utmost standards of professionalism. A thorough investigation is currently underway to meticulously examine the incident, and appropriate measures will be taken.

Such conduct is entirely contrary to the fundamental values of our service, and we are steadfast in maintaining a customs operation that is transparent and accountable.

We urge passengers and the public to promptly report any instances of misconduct or corruption. These reports are crucial for preserving the integrity of our service and ensuring that officers adhere to the highest ethical standards.

The NCS remains steadfast in its dedication to fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. The findings of the investigation will be communicated to the public at the earliest opportunity," the PRO assured.
