Court to rule on witness eligibility in Emefiele trial
An Abuja High Court has adjourned until November 27 to rule on the eligibility of a prosecution witness in the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele. Emefiele faces a 20-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust, forgery, and obtaining money by false pretence. The charges stem from allegations that Emefiele awarded contracts worth ₦1.2 billion to a company in which a CBN staff member is a director and shareholder. Emefiele pleaded not guilty.
During the hearing, Emefiele's counsel objected to the prosecution's 11th witness, Alvan Grumman, testifying, citing a previous court ruling that struck out additional evidence. The prosecution argued that the witness has material facts and urged the court to allow him to testify.
Justice Hamza Muazu adjourned the matter to rule on the objection and for further hearing. The court also reserved ruling on the prosecution's applications for subpoenas for two witnesses, which the defense argued were bound by the previous court decision.
The case has been ongoing, with the prosecution and defense presenting their arguments. The court's ruling on the witness's eligibility and the subpoena applications is expected on November 27.
