Chaos Unfolds as Gunmen Allegedly Invade Home of Rivers Factional Speaker
Late on Sunday night, a residence believed to be owned by Edison Ehie, the factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, was allegedly raided by individuals suspected to be armed police officers and political thugs in Port Harcourt. The incident occurred amid the ongoing turmoil within the state legislature.
Edison Ehie, the former House Leader, had declared himself the Speaker amidst the internal conflicts in the State House of Assembly. Last month, 24 lawmakers suspended him from his role, prompting Ehie to proclaim himself as the Speaker, asserting that 26 lawmakers had unanimously elected him.
Details of the attack remain unclear, and it is uncertain whether there were any casualties or damage during the invasion. However, reports suggest that Ehie's security details successfully repelled the attack, suspected to be an assassination attempt.
The incident unfolded while 27 lawmakers, led by House Speaker Martin Amaewhule, were on a retreat to Abuja, described as a capacity-building initiative by Amaewhule.
The spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that she had not received the report but assured an investigation. As of Monday morning, no updates had been provided.
A statement attributed to Ken Uchendu, identified as the Legislative Correspondent of the State House of Assembly, characterized the attack as an assassination attempt. The statement alleged the involvement of the leader of a police tactical unit in the state and unidentified accomplices. It warned senior police officers of responsibility for any harm to the new Speaker and his household, and promised to release CCTV footage of the incident for public confirmation. The statement also threatened a mass public demonstration if there was a breakdown of law and order in Rivers State.
