Catholic Diocese speaks on release of abducted Niger students

The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora, which is responsible for St Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, has announced the release of another group of individuals who were abducted from the school on 21 November.

This announcement was made in a statement released on 21 December, signed by the diocesan secretary, Jatau Joseph.

Reports indicated that the released individuals, which included both students and staff, were freed at a location near Nigeria’s border with the Benin Republic.

While the Diocese did not specify the exact number of those released, government officials stated that 130 captives had been freed and were on their way to Minna, the capital of Niger State.

The Diocese expressed deep gratitude to the federal and state governments, security forces, and others who played a role in facilitating the safe release of the victims.

It also thanked parents, guardians, religious communities, humanitarian organizations, and the general public for their prayers, support, and solidarity throughout the duration of the captivity.

The statement promised that further updates would be provided through the proper authorized channels once verification processes are completed, to ensure accuracy, transparency, and clarity.

Additionally, the Diocese praised media organizations for their responsible reporting and cooperation throughout the crisis, while reiterating its dedication to the safety, welfare, and protection of all pupils, students, and staff.

There have been varying reports regarding the number of individuals abducted. Whereas government officials claim that all captives have been released, the school management had previously stated that the remaining number of abducted individuals stands at 165, following the release of 100 individuals on 7 December.

This indicates that there could be 35 individuals still unaccounted for.

In the meantime, the Diocese has committed to continue working with the appropriate authorities to guarantee a safe and nurturing learning environment, and has prayed for the quick release of anyone who may still be in captivity.
